Garden Unit
This project is an Accessory Dwelling Unit designed to be a garden unit for an idealized corner lot in Chicago. The premise of a garden unit was achieved through a branched floor plan which creates a front yard for the ADU as well as creating an intimate space in the backyard.
The ADU can be entered off of the alley where the residents and guests experience the first courtyard. The angled continuation of the wall aligns with the angles of the ADU as well as guides people to the front door.
The courtyards are screened by perforated brick walls with bricks positioned perpendicular to the bent section to allow for light to pass through while maintaining privacy. The front courtyard contains brick pavers that change direction to draw emphasis to the kink. This pattern continues in the rear courtyard with a hardscape that is perpendicular to the angled wall.
The first level serves as the public space of the ADU with the functioning portion of the program pushed to the back wall to maintain the sharp lines of the floorplan. A built-in brick bench serves as a multi-purpose piece as it transitions into a flower bed in the rear courtyard.
The second level serves as the private area of the ADU containing the bedroom. This level transitions to a green roof opening up to the primary residence. Built-in brick features appear as a bench, flower beds, and a desk for the residents.
